Dick Jaspers of the Netherlands reclaimed the title of Dutch Champion after a two-year drought and thus rose to the top of the UMB International rankings. The Dutch Championship, called the Masters, was held January 19-22 and played to sold out crowds. Jaspers coming off a successful 2016 World Cup season as the title holder rolls into 2017 with multiple titles and expectations that this may his best year ever.

Dave Christiani has won his first three cushion Grand Prix in the Netherlands. The Limburg player defeated Jean Paul de Bruijn, his last rival, in the final match at the Grand Prix in Capelle aan den IJssel: 40-23 in 20 innings. ,,I have been waiting a long time, because I lost three times in a final, now I finally magaged to win'', beamed Christiani, who rose on the national ranking to third place behind Raimond Burgman and Barry Beers. Dick Jaspers, who could not play in this last Grand Prix, finished fourth. These four players are the leaders of the four groups at the Masters in 2017.

The Turkish player Lütfi Cenet was the great winner in a national three cushion tournament in Edirne, 250 kilometers from Istanbul. The world's top 20 player defeated Murat Celik in the final match 40-23 in 24 innings and in the semi-finals Can Capak 40-17 in 18. Cenet's tournament average was 1.923, his high run 12.

Jung-Han Heo is the winner of the 2016 UMB Hurghada World Cup. For the first time since January 2014 a Korean player has taken a world cup title. Heo's performance began in the qualification round where he led the day, winning his group. He then overcame a lackluster start in his opening match in the main tournament to catch fire at the very end and win to advance. Along the way to the championship top players from Belgium (twice), Korea (twice) and finally Netherlands fell as Heo joined the ranks of the world's elite players.
